Car Friction
Car Friction
Friction gives the centripital for that allows car around curves. Minimum coefficient of friction w givens is?
Friction provides the centripetal force that allows a car to round a circular curve. Find the minimum coefficient of friction needed between the tires and the road to allow a 1600 kilogram car to round a curve of radius 80. meters at a speed of 20. meters per second.
At equilibrium, centrifugal force = centripetal force
Centrifugal force=mv^2/r,
where m=mass=1600kg
v=velocity=20m/s
r=radius=80m
Centrifugal force = 8000N
But centripetal force=friction=f x W
W= weight per tire = 1600/4 = 400kg = 3920N
thus,
Coeff of friction,f=8000/3920 = 2.041
