It’s often really difficult for comedians to walk the delicate line between delivering hilarious and fresh material without being to raunchy or vulgar. If the comedian is too offensive, they turn the audience off and run the risk of completely alienating their fans. Sarah Silverman has become a household name in recent years, in large part because so many people have found her comedy surprising and vulgar. The comic focuses on all sorts of topics that are normally taboo, and often her punchlines revolve around her political incorrectness. Whether or not she’s offensive is determined on each person’s interpretation. Try watching some of her work on satellite tv and you can come to your own conclusion about whether her comedy is genius or immature.
Silverman got her start as a writer on Saturday Night Live in the early 1990s, but after only a season she was fired from the show because her sketches weren’t making the cut. Her unique comedy style just didn’t suit a comedy show that is so institutionalized as SNL has become, and since only one of the sketches she wrote ever aired, it would probably be nearly impossible for you to find it to watch, even on satellite tv, where you can watch SNL in syndication everyday. From there, she went on to work on HBO’s Mr. Show with David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, and after that she went on to have many small, but memorable roles in Hollywood films. Those include: Who’s the Caboose, Overnight Delivery, Bulworth, There’s Something About Mary, The Bachelor, What Planet are you From?, Screwed, The Way of the Gun, Black Days, Say It Isn’t So, Heartbreakers, Evolution, Run Ronnie Run, School of Rock Hair High, The Aristocrats, Rent, I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With, School for Scoundrels, Fired!, Certifiably Jonathan, Futurama: Bender’s Big Score, Super High Me, Funny People, and Saint John of Las Vegas.
While Comedy Central’s Sarah Silverman Program has been canceled, the program had high ratings for the three years it existed and also earned an Emmy nomination. On the show, Silverman plays a fictional version of herself. The show follows her experiences as she interacts with her friends, her sister, and her gay neighbors. The humor of the show revolves around the ridiculous way Sarah lives her life as she’s irresponsible and immature. For now, you can still catch the show on satellite tv, and it’s highly likely that reruns of the show will begin airing soon.
In 2005, Silverman released Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic, which was an hour-and-a-half worth of material from her stand-up show. In the show, Silverman starts out as a fictionalized loser-version of herself who is out to make it big. She delivers many funny songs that she wrote, as well as many punchlines about all sorts of topics such as: sexism and gender relations, dwarfism, disabilities, politics, religion, The Holocaust, AIDS, race and racism, homelessness, and sex. By the end of the program, Silverman has achieved stardom and as a consequence, she delivers hilarious insults to those who cross her path. The comedy special is often reaired on comedy central, so check your satellite tv listings to find out when the next time you can watch it will be!
