Always adapting material from one medium to another, there is always the danger of losing something in the adaptation. This usually happens if the original material was in the literary form, like a novel or a Comic Book. Another cause could be the additional stress and anxiety about the director adaptation, because the more original material probably had a large fan base, which is susceptible to disturbances in any case too drastic occurs during the change.
Very often, the fundamental strategy for dealing with this type of problem is to eliminate what could be considered "filler" material, leaving only what needs to be present for the integrity of the plot. "Tolkien's Lord of the Rings" and several series from Japan to Hollywood conversions as "Godzilla" and "Ultraman" are victims of this. However, judging by the stress of the animators and the reaction of hardcore fans, even the Japan-exclusive game genre known as the visual novel is difficult to translate. Take, for example, "Fate / Stay Night", based on the novel visual the same name.
TYPE-MOON, the company that made the source material, confirmed his reputation for great detail, the characters of high artistic and solar "Fate / stay night" was one of the most anticipated games of its kind in recent decades. The game itself had multiple endings, carried out through three scenarios, each with a plot that unfolds in a clearly different from the others, as well as having approximately the same large players in the deal. The game's success and relatively warm reception for the adaptation of an earlier work TYPE-MOON, "Tsukihime", which exerts sufficient pressure and stress in business to make the rights to an anime version of F / SN. The show also drops several important personalities and the relationship between Sakura, his brother Shinji, and the creature known as "Rider."
The show, however, have some good points. The plot is consistent and strong, mainly due to the quality of work that went into the original plot of TYPE-MOON. The characters that focus on some of the most developed seen in this type of anime, that fit perfectly with the visual quality of first class entertainment. Several of the scenes echo some of the most beloved scenes from the visual novel, though some had to be changed due to the nature of its content.
Ultimately, "Fate / Stay Night" is an example of both what can be done right and wrong on the translation of stories from one medium to another. Due to the broad and expansive materials written in the original game, and the large number of possible decisions a player can make that have an effect on the outcome, it would be impossible to get everything to fit into the context of a program 24 episodes. However, the adjustments good enough from the material elements were held to be recognizable both by fans and interesting enough to attract non-fans.
