I need help with a problem on my geometry homework?

These story problems always confuse me.

ok, Raphael has programmed his robot to walk the perimeter of a triangle with side lengths 6 feet, 11 feet with a 35˚ angle between them. Unfortunately, his robot has is running low on batteries. Raphael estimates that it will be able to travel about 20 feet before it stops.

a. Draw a diagram to represent the situation

b. Will his robot be able to walk the perimeter before its batteries run out? Justify your answers with calculations.

I need help…thank you for answering.

You actually don’t have to draw a diagram (which won’t show up in Yahoo, anyway). There’s a tool in trigonometry called the Law of Cosines that will work in this case.

Let a = 6, b = 11, C = 35º

The law of Cosines gives the solution as

c² = a² + b² – 2abCos(C) [Where c = third side]

c² = 6² + 11² – 2(6)(11)cos(35)

c² = 36 + 121 – 132(0.8191)

c² = 157 – 108.1

c² = 48.9

c = 7

a + b + c = 6 + 11 + 7 = RRRrrr…

It dies out, four feet short of the end.
