Is the space program to put at least one solar panel in space to see if electricity can be sent to the earth?
How about working in real problems for a while?
No. And here's why. If you want to beam energy of a solar power station in space, that station has to stay above the receiving station. This means that the geostationary orbit. That is 36,000 km (the Space Station, however, only orbits about 400 km altitude). So far, the only objects in geosynchronous orbit are telecommunications satellites, and for that should prompt an additional rocket. Now, if someone has the money to show this project would also have to build a receiving station, and because of the distance, a microwave beam have diverged enough especially on 36,000 km, and the receiving antenna would then have to be huge to pick up the power (think about a kilometer in diameter). Once more: the enormous cost. And to have enough power to generate a microwave beam that can travel 36,000 kilometers, and of a collection in one kilometers 1 + antenna farm, radio station would have to generate loss of power, ie, would also need huge solar panels. This plant would be several times the size of the station space and see how much problem there is this thing just to build only 400 km altitude? So all we have is a pretty good understanding that it is feasible, with lots of resources, but no proof has been made. And apparently not willing to fund such demonstration.
