The Lord of the Rings: Finding Middle Earth in New Zealand

The Lord of the Rings history has captured the imagination of millions of people worldwide. New Zealand has been fortunate to be involved in this global phenomenon, thanks to critically acclaimed Lord of Peter Jackson's film trilogy Rings. The open spaces, diverse landscapes and spectacular scenery of New Zealand were the best place to shoot films, allowing New Zealanders to show their country growth and create a Lord of the Rings tourism industry.

Part of the success of Lord of the Rings can be attributed to its complexity and Tolkien's endless work in developing a credible and highly detailed back-story. These trips proved brilliant story is the story progresses, filling in important details and creating a world that lives and breathes with a rich history in the minds of readers.

Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy

After several feature acclaimed but moderately successful, New Zealand, Peter Jackson turned their attention to a new project, one that consumed many years of his life and eventually turn it into a Hollywood star and one of the most requested by principals.

Jackson always had the desire to make a movie update of the Lord of the Rings and often wondered why had not been done before. After years of negotiation and revised scripts, Jackson and New Line Cinemas finally agreed to the film and the Lord's deliverance of the Rings is a trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Filmed entirely in New Zealand, the films turned out to be financial gold mine both parties, with the combined profits of the films, video games and game related products easily in the billions of dollars.

The films were released to critical acclaim both and while some purists felt Jackson deviated too much from the book, most agreed that was both faithful to the book and a movie spectacular. The three films combined for 17 Academy Awards with the return of the King is the most successful, winning 11 of the present, including Best Picture and Best Director for Peter Jackson.

The film created a windfall for New Zealand in terms of advertising, tourism, the creation of film industry and the creation of Weta Workshops as a leading design studio special effects. Wellington was even chosen as a destination for premiere of the latest chapter in the trilogy, The Return of the King.

With the Lord of New Zealand push Rings spectacular scenery for the spotlight, it was inevitable that a demand to see it up close and personal would be created.
