Space Tank

Why is the main tank on the Space Shuttle orange on some flights and white like the rest of them on others?
It has been orange for some time now. The reason it is not white is because of the extra weight the paint adds to the shuttle. I do not know when the paint was done away with exactly, but it was early in the shuttle program.
