Tin Flying
is fishing “The Bung” a good way to fly fish?
I have Never Used a strike indicator before, however after reading an article on a fly fishing website about fishing “the bung,” I really like the idea of suspending flies under a buoyant indicator, because coming from a coarse fishing background, it is very reminiscent of float fishing, only with a fly instead of a maggot or worm for bait. According to this particular article, ideal flies for fishing the bung on Stillwaters include the tin head egg fly, the Bunny Leech and the Zug Zonker.
Great mothod ,forget Bunny Leech and Zug Zonker they are way to big, buzzer nymphs and blood worm imitations are the way to go.
The best patterns I have found are tied by a company called Fulling Mill ( they are on the web ) Hot spot red blood worm , Flexi Floss Black Buzzer , Red Necked Black Buzzer and the Rutland Black Buzzer, all in sizes 8 through to 12.
Cast out and let them fish round on the wind , you see how many times your sight indicator shoots under youl’ll be surprised.
On some waters you are only allowed to use one fly , so the use of a dropper could get you in a bit of trouble.
Forgot to mention it can make casting a little bit tricky, I moved up from a 7# to an 8# weight forward , just gives you that little bit extra to aid turn over.
