on training a terrier x agility?
for a month or so I've been toying with the idea of training my little Manchester terrier x agility. not for competition, just for fun in our backyard. after seeing the ERC on TV today I am convinced that he had love. it is not only fast physically, but mentally too. seems to seek challenges. my gut tells me to wait until their physical year 1 and vaccines make sure you are healthy and strong. but it is enough a year old? your bones strong enough? Dome loves our sofa plus 2 of our 100 Dog pounds, but try to limit the playing time like that. that has been in joint NUPRO health since she was six months. And how I can get your started without any stressing us? I want to have fun while burning energy. how much time per day we start? I am baffled trying to find a way to take to knit around the poles. advice, suggestions or links would be great. all my experience with dogs offers retraining for large adults. thanks in advance.
I suggest you find an introduction to the local agility class. Check local agility clubs, because they are usually less expensive and more likely to be taught for someone who competes in agility. My only club charges $ 10/class, which is much smaller than I was paying into a training center. I'm sure his terrier would very well, and probably better than some other breeds and mixes out there. My instructor has several champions Sheltie, but also a terrier who is just out, and even better in some aspects of things agility. Any breed can compete, so no big deal. Has reason to be concerned about their joint health. You can start training at any time, but you want to keep a low jump height and limit the number of hops that makes up a little more. Your instructor will be experienced with this aspect training young dogs, and know what to do if he or she knows your dog's age and their concerns. If there is any kind of training / club nearby I can vouch for the training books by Jane Simmons-Moake. He has written several series of them, and with his previous experience in training I think you will appreciate his approach. Some the obstacles are very easy to train, but the fabrics are a natural activity for dogs, so its a little harder. In the book of J. SM I have, There are instuctions on the back of your own agility equipment maknig, so you can have your own little practice field in his garden. Overall great fun, and is a great way to bond with your dog while you practice obedience commands. It is one of the few things that really tires my puppy mixed border collie, and longs for the mental exercise it as well. Go for it, and good luck!
